Fresh start

The New Year is fast approaching and while you are enjoying the festive holidays you may be reflecting on your achievements of the past year and what the New Year will bring. Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year falls on the 10^th February this year and it is the year of the snake. Now you may or may not celebrate the Chinese New Year but many people follow their Chinese birth sign along with their zodiac sign so it is a nice touch to send them a card wishing them good luck and prosperity in their year of the snake. The Chinese Zodiac runs on a twelve year cycle but on a lunar year so New Year can happen between the 21^st January and the 20^th February, this means that people with birthdays around this time maybe year of the Dragon or year of the Horse and not the Snake.

Saint Patrick’s Day

17^th March is no longer just a feast day for the patron saint of Ireland but has become a celebration of all things Irish. With many parades and parties happening the world over it is a time to show off your Irish side. Diwali or Festival of Lights.

Diwali is a festival celebrated between mid-October and mid-December and for Hindus Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. The name "Diwali" is a contraction of "Deepavali" which translates into "row of lamps”. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night and one's house is cleaned, both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome.

 Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshmana, from his 14-year-long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. Boss’s Day also known as The Bo$$ Day or National Boss Day is a secular holiday celebrated on October 16 in the United States and Canada. It has traditionally been a day for employees to thank their bosses for being kind and fair throughout the year.

 Patricia Bays Haroski registered "National Boss' Day" with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1958. She was working as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois. Four years later in 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner backed Haroski's registration and officially proclaimed the day.

Nurses Day / Week

The celebration of National Nurses Week is held yearly and opens on May 6, which is the official National Nurses Day (USA), and continues through May 12. International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12 which is the birthday of the worlds most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale.



The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition.



In 2003, National School Nurses Day was moved from the fourth Wednesday in January to the Wednesday of Nurses Week. Many websites, still record School Nurses Day in January, unaware of this change.



Operating Room Nurses Week and Day is celebrated in the second week in November. Other nursing specialties also have their own specific weeks at different times of the year. National Nurses Week celebrates all nurses at the same time.
