The New Year

Fresh start

The New Year is fast approaching and while you are enjoying the festive holidays you may be reflecting on your achievements of the past year and what the New Year will bring. Do not dwell to long on any achievements you failed to reach but rather make a quick note as to why you did not reach them, was the targets to high or the time scale to short, or maybe you were just not ready or you were not organised enough to reach them.

You have just given your self the information you need to make next years goals achievable. Do not set your goals to high (or to low) and give your self enough time to complete them, too much time and you will put your goals off till it is to late, to short time and you will over run and suffer disappointment. The key to success is being realistic and organised. With being organised in mind, here are a few things to help you along the way.

Thank you cards

What a better way to show your appreciation for the meals and parties your were invited too or the wonderful gifts your received than to take the time to send the host or sender a thank you card.

Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year falls on the 10th February this year and it is the year of the snake. Now you may or may not celebrate the Chinese New Year but many people follow their Chinese birth sign along with their zodiac sign so it is a nice touch to send them a card wishing them good luck and prosperity in their year of the snake. The Chinese Zodiac runs on a twelve year cycle but on a lunar year so New Year can happen between the 21st January and the 20th February, this means that people with birthdays around this time maybe year of the Dragon or year of the Horse and not the Snake.

Valentine’s Day

The 14th February is celebrated by lovers the world over, they may call it Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day or even the Feast of Saint Valentine. It is an opportunity to reaffirm your affections to a loved one or to venture to express your hidden love for a friend. This is usually done with the sending of cards that are adorned with harts, flowers and cupids. Saint Patrick’s Day

17th March is no longer just a feast day for the patron saint of Ireland but has become a celebration of all things Irish. With many parades and parties happening the world over it is a time to show off your Irish side. This may be a bit confusing for some as Saint Patrick is know for driving all the snakes out of Ireland and this being the year of the snake.

Mother's Day / Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday in the UK is the fourth Sunday in lent which falls on the 18th March this year while Mothers Day in many other countries around the world falls on Sunday the 12th May with some celebrating on the 13th May.

Now in the first decades of the 21st century the internet is giving people the world over many new ways of expressing their sentiments with sites like http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/martinscardstore Greeting Card Universe where you can not only customize your cards but you can ask the artists to design a card just for you. Diwali or Festival of Lights.

  Diwali
Diwali is a festival celebrated between mid-October and mid-December and for Hindus Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. The name "Diwali" is a contraction of "Deepavali" which translates into "row of lamps”. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night and one's house is cleaned, both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome.

Diwali

Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshmana, from his 14-year-long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas and by bursting firecrackers.

  Diwali

Diwali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji.

Patricia Bays Haroski registered "National Boss' Day" with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1958. She was working as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois. Four years later in 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner backed Haroski's registration and officially proclaimed the day.

National Boss' Day has become an international celebration in recent years and now is observed in countries such as Australia, India and South Africa and very recently Ireland ,UK and Egypt(10 Dec every year only in Egypt ). Nurses Day / Week

The celebration of National Nurses Week is held yearly and opens on May 6, which is the official National Nurses Day (USA), and continues through May 12. International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12 which is the birthday of the worlds most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale.

The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition.

In 2003, National School Nurses Day was moved from the fourth Wednesday in January to the Wednesday of Nurses Week. Many websites, still record School Nurses Day in January, unaware of this change.

Operating Room Nurses Week and Day is celebrated in the second week in November. Other nursing specialties also have their own specific weeks at different times of the year. National Nurses Week celebrates all nurses at the same time.

Therefore, if you know a nurse why not send them a card to show them a small sign of appreciation for the great work that they do and if you want to give them something a bit more unique, then why don’t you make that greeting card your self. You will find all the help, supplies and inspiration you will need at Crafts U Print even temples to make things a bit easier.
